Even before the advent of social media, word of mouth was well documented as the most effective form of marketing. This remains true in the digital world, and many social media users place their trust in recommendations from friends and family. Its also a big reason whyinfluencer marketing has become a mainstream practice for marketers across industries.

Referrals are another powerful facet of word-of-mouth marketing, which can incentivize current customers to bring in new ones. An infographic from Referral SaaSquatch examines how and why referral marketing works.

The biggest contributing factor in the success of referral marketing is the desire to share. Everyone loves a great deal, and if referring a friend means bigger savings, all the better. Customers also like having options for how to refer their friends, with nearly 80 percent choosing to copy and paste. This method also results in the highest conversion rate of all other other sharing methods.

Check out the infographic below for more on how referral marketing works.

Morris starts MadAddie, marketing firm heavy on research

Kariann Morris, a local entrepreneur who founded Virtual Flow and Tech Valley Creative Minds, has started a third firm, MadAddie, a market research and marketing firm.

The new company provides services to companies including branding, advertising, public relations and social media. Her clients include Bay State Elevator, Saratoga Hospital and Glens Falls Hospital.

And while many other marketing firms offer similar services, Morris said she is different in two ways. She bases all of her recommendations on market research, and she tracks her client's return on investment.

"What makes us different is the research we do," Morris said.

That means interviewing the customers of its clients and doing Web traffic analysis that allows Morris and her team to understand how a company is viewed and reached online and who their target audience is.

Morris sold Virtual Flow, a Web design and hosting company, in 2005 so she could start Tech Valley Creative Minds.

The name MadAddie comes from two concepts. First the "mad" comes from the idea of being a brilliant mind, like a mad scientist or Steve Jobs.

The Addie comes from a process design flow model used by the military called ADDIE that is an acronym for analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation.

While Morris lives in Ballston Lake, her firm uses a "virtual" model and does not lease office space. She said that cuts down on overhead, freeing up more money for Morris to invest in the business and her five employees, who can work from anywhere. On Wednesday, Morris and her marketing research analyst Natalie Pollard were meeting with client Wes Horth of Bay State Elevator in a conference room at the Million Air hangar at Albany International Airport in Colonie.

"Mostly we go to our clients," Morris said. "It allows us to be cost competitive, and it allows us to be very flexible."

Morris had most recently worked at Fingerpaint Marketing and then worked on her own as a consultant before starting her new firm in the last few months.

a social network site, it becomes more popular and easier to find on search engines.

When it comes to gaining higher positions in search engine rankings, you have to focus on relevancy. You can only raise your position if the search engines notice that your site is valuable to to visitors. Besides making sure to update your website daily, you should be providing fresh links to different websites. If you update your links daily, people will be coming to your website to get the latest links to all the new websites, which will increase search engine optimization.

After choosing your keyword phrase, purchase a domain name that includes your keyword. It will increase the likelihood of click-throughs, and it will give readers an instant idea as to what your site is about. This is key to rankings and is part of the reason you should always choose slightly less popular keyword phrases so that you are more likely to still find open domain names.

In this age and day, you would be foolish to not even consider using advanced web design methods as a way to get your company's name out to the world. In order to make sure that you take hold of this opportunity and make the most out of it, with the amount of devices that are used to connect to the Internet that exist today, you will want to read this article.

Make sure the code you write has a valid HTML+CSS if you're designing a website. Although most browsers can make sense of code that isn't valid, it could be rendered correctly or incorrectly. Valid code will render the same way most of the time in modern browsers. You can check the validity of your HTML code with an HTML validator.

Although it is common to see the www. at the front of a website URL, you should try to make sure that you can access your site whether you choose to include it or not. This will make it much easier for anyone to access regardless of how they type it.

To help keep your site visitors happy, do not underline words. Underline words on the internet signifies that the word is a clickable link. If you have too many words on your pages that are underlined with being clickable links, then your visitors will be frustrated after continuously trying to click on them.

You should seriously consider buying your own web hosting if you plan on having a commercial site. Most free host sites force you to display their advertisements, which is counter-intuitive if you are attempting to sell something as well. Purchase your own hosting to avoid this advertising hassle, so that you can choose your own ads.

Be sure your website works both without and with the "www" prefix. And some may not, some people will type this in before they head to your site as a force of habit. You should make sure that customers will be directed to your site either way, or you may have some confused people on your hands.

You can create a site using free software. A lot of users think they have to buy pricey applications, but many free programs are out there to give you a hand. You just have to search a little to locate the free tools that best suit you.

Learn the basics of HTML and CSS. In order to create a web page, these templates provide only limited design possibilities, although there are many templates that allow you to just fill in the blanks. Understanding how the mark-up language and stylesheet work together will enable you to customize your website to your heart's content.

Always make sure that your site design works well on every browser. Your coding might look great in Firefox, but it could be askew in Internet Explorer. You need to find out exactly how things look in all browsers and then code in a way that leaves your site looking the same on every popular browser.

Incorporate independent CSS paging for browsers and make use of conditional loading, as you design your site. Using these techniques makes it much easier for testing and ensuing maintenance later on. You do not want to run into problems when making changes to your site.

Site maps are an excellent piece of technology that allow users and search engines to get a better view of your site's layouts and functions without extra work. Include a link to your sitemap from the homepage and leave it as simple as possible. The sitemap doesn't need fancy graphics or fonts, just layout your website and update it when needed.

Keep the levels of literacy in mind when you are writing your content. Realize that most people aren't as educated and sophisticated enough to understand all that fancy writing, and that might turn them off and leave your site. To build an audience, your visitors need to be able to comprehend the information you're publishing.

A good resource where you can learn some insightful knowledge is a book store. You can go to a bookstore and read books that have information on html, c+, photoshop, and dreamweaver as these are some of the key things you need to learn when it comes to being a well- knowledgable web designer.

Invest in some books on the topic of web design. You want to make sure you don't miss any information as you go, although be sure you begin with information that is targeted to your current design level you want to improve your skills.

To help you plan ahead, you want to make a visual sitemap. This can give you an idea of where you want to go in the future. With a visual sitemap, you will see exactly how your structure is developing. This will allow you to hone in on anything that needs some tinkering. Alternatively, perhaps something that you have completely overlooked. Experts agree that a good visual representation is essential for creating a quality site.

If you expect many people to contribute to the content of the website, incorporating a content management system (CMS) into the design of the website might be a good idea. A CMS will make it easier for everyone to add to and update the content without needing a high level of technical knowledge. These systems are easy to use, and can make publishing content on the website much more efficient.

When it comes time to choosing a host for your website, make certain you know exactly what they will be providing you and at what cost. Things like disk bandwidth and space are crucial to the proper functioning of your site so make sure beforehand that your host is providing you with everything that you will need and at a price you can handle.

One reason to keep up with your website, is to check for negative comments or spam. This is especially true for the blog owners out there and people with forums. A professional website designer will always be prepared to wipe away the trash and clean up the page.

Make sure that you include an "About Us" page on your site as you are designing it. Do not just add blocks of text that are boring to read - Jazz it up a bit! Provide background information, maybe include some photos of you as you work toward getting to the point where you are at today.

After reading this article, you should have a better idea about what needs to be done to design your website. Create a budget, look for advisors, and start your website. Get started on creating the best website possible for your business without any costly expenses.
